Birdie Busch makes and records independent music from her home base of Philadelphia. The longtime Philly-folk-country queen creates nuanced-voice originals with her strangely subtle avant-hillbilly band of musicians and friends. Critics from American Songwriter to Village Voice have found her of kindred spirit from everyone from Syd Barrett to Eudora Welty, and seem to just keep referring to what she does as her own thing and appreciating that strange sonic swamp where it resides. City Paper says, “She’s noisy when she might’ve hushed up, nervy when most are relaxed, funny when others stay forlorn and dressy when she could be buttoned-up.” It’s this comfort to contain multitudes that has had her and her band sharing stages with everyone from Richard Thompson and Richie Havens to Dr.Dog and Junip. Paste Magazine describes her as “a steady hand and a steadier voice, built from years of practicing and honing the material.” You can also hear her music in the documentary Waldo on Weed, streaming now on Prime Video, which was featured at the Tribeca Film Festival. During the pandemic, she has written songs and performed virtually for several charitable efforts, including Fuel the Fight, a Philly based compilation that raises money for essential workers.
