How Companies Need to Think About Resource Allocation Now—and in the Future

  • Harvard Business Review (map)

ABOUT THE EVENT

Business leaders know the mantra, “Never let a good crisis go to waste,” yet few leaders live by this rule. A study of companies after past recessions found that 17% didn’t survive and 80% of those that survived were still struggling three years later. And only 9% of surviving companies “roared” out of the recession. The issue in responding quickly and proactively enough is a systemic one as companies struggle to change how they allocate resources. On February 10, 2021, in a live video webinar, Harvard Business School Professor Ranjay Gulati will:

  • Explore why companies often struggle with shifting their resource allocation

  • Analyze the emotional factors that create inertia

  • Offer concrete suggestions to revise resource allocation processes

Gulati will also discuss the strategic frame that organizations use for thinking about resource allocation decisions and will describe why and how leaders should reform their budgeting process.

In most organizations, the default is stubbornly investing in the same old ways, even as markets change. To learn how to fundamentally rethink your organization’s resource allocation — for the current crisis and into the future — join Gulati and HBR on February 10.
