Hey PSL, we need to talk…a message from a fellow member

(This message is from a PSL member and is reposted from the PSL listserve) Number of people on the PSL list:  ~700 Number of people coming to the PSL happy hour these days:  ~30 WTH So, here is the top ten reasons to come to this week's PSL happy hour: (http://psl.ticketleap.com/psl-february-happy-hour/) 10. DreamIt and Open Angel Forum applications are due soon.  Scope out your competition. 9.   You can talk about the startup experience without people suggesting Seroquel. 8.   City Councilman at large Bill Greene sometimes shows up.  So you can ask pointed questions like, "Why does the city keep suing me just because I didn't file a wage tax return in 2008 when I didn't have any employees?  Can't you just send me an email that you are missing a return?" 7.  You can have a meaningful discussion about how to hack the numbered list in gmail to count down backwards.  (I wish I knew right now.) 6.  LAMPs.  Rubies.  Rails.  Stacks.  Pirates.  Ninjas.  Indiana Jones.  Hello, Kitty. 5.  If you have a surplus of vowels, you can unload them here.  Startup domain names are in desperate need of vowels. 4.  If you are not incorporated yet.  Find someone who is and learn how to incorporate.  If you are pre-revenue.  Find someone who has revenue and learn how to get some.  If you are pre-exit.  Find someone who exited and and find way out.   (Basically, find someone who can pull you up by the bootstraps.  And find someone who you can pull up as well.) 3.  Angel spotting.  Pitch, pitch, pitch. 2.  The PSL leadership also sometimes shows up.  So, you can ask them pointed questions like "How come when Blake was in charge there were a ton of people at the PSL happy hours?" And the #1 reason to come the the PSL happy hour is ... 1.  That warm feeling you get knowing you are not alone in Philly.

Mike started Chariot in 2002 with a modest amount of angel money, an invaluable group of mentors and founding employees, and a team-wide commitment to quality, discipline, and both customer and employee satisfaction. The company quickly developed a reputation for quality that has led to consistent growth, and a brand that has strong appeal to both clients and recruits. Chariot is now worth millions and recognized as Philadelphia's top workplace among small businesses in 2010 as rated by the Philadelphia Inquirer. But it all started with philosophy. In this lecture Mike will discuss mission based decision making and how to set initial foundations, paralleling the moves and strategies that got Chariot funding, built a team of top employees and achieved high-end deals for their company. Learn what it takes to hire and retain top talent, land big deals as a startup and grow based on revenue. This is not to be missed by anyone looking to grow a business, not just launch a startup.
